Overview
A/B Testing (also called Split Testing) allows you to create multiple variations of your announcement bar and test them with real visitors to discover which version performs best. This is a powerful Pro feature for data-driven optimization.
Pro Feature: A/B Testing is only available on the HashBar Pro plan. This feature includes unlimited test variants, automatic traffic splitting, and statistical analysis.
What is A/B Testing?
A/B Testing compares two or more variations of your announcement bar to see which one achieves better results. Instead of guessing what works, you let real visitor behavior guide your decisions.
Basic Concept
- Variant A: Your current or control bar (baseline)
- Variant B, C, D, etc.: Alternative versions with different messaging, design, or offers
- Visitors: Are randomly assigned to see one variant
- Results: Compared to determine which variant performs best
Creating Test Variants
Unlimited Variants
Create as many test variants as you need. Each variant is completely independent with its own settings:
- Different message text
- Different colors and styling
- Different coupon codes or offers
- Different buttons or CTAs
- Different animations or positioning
Variant Configuration
Each variant can be customized with any HashBar feature:
- Text content and messaging
- Background colors and styling
- Coupon codes and displays
- Countdown timers
- Buttons and call-to-actions
- Animations and transitions
- Icons and images
Important: Scheduling and other global settings apply to the entire test, not individual variants. All variants appear during the same time periods.
Traffic Distribution
Automatic Traffic Splitting
HashBar automatically divides incoming visitors among your test variants based on percentage allocation.
Percentage Configuration
Set how much traffic each variant receives (0-100%):
- Equal split: 50% Variant A, 50% Variant B (best for head-to-head testing)
- Weighted split: 70% Variant A, 30% Variant B (testing while maintaining current traffic)
- Custom split: Any combination that totals 100%
Traffic Allocation Logic
- Each visitor is assigned to exactly one variant
- Assignment is random and evenly distributed
- Same visitor always sees the same variant (cookie-based persistence)
- No visitor sees multiple variants during the same test
Visitor Assignment
For Guest Visitors
Visitors not logged into your site are assigned variants using cookies:
- A browser cookie stores their assigned variant
- If the same browser visits again, they see the same variant
- Consistent experience for repeat visitors
For Logged-In Users
Registered users are assigned variants using their user_id:
- Assignment is based on their account, not browser cookies
- Same experience across all devices and browsers
- Reliable tracking even if they clear cookies or use multiple browsers
Assignment Stability
Once assigned, a visitor's variant doesn't change during the test period. This ensures clean, accurate results and consistent user experience.
Tracking and Metrics
Impressions
Counts how many times each variant is displayed to visitors.
- Increments each time a visitor sees the announcement bar
- Used to calculate click-through rates and conversion rates
Clicks
Tracks interactions with your announcement bar (button clicks, link clicks, etc.).
- Counts clicks on any call-to-action within the bar
- Used to calculate engagement rate
Conversions
Records meaningful actions like purchases, signups, or form submissions.
- Requires conversion tracking setup (pixel or event tracking)
- Most important metric for ROI calculation
- Used to determine test winner
Per-Variant Analytics
View detailed metrics for each variant in your test dashboard:
- Impression count
- Click count and click-through rate (CTR)
- Conversion count and conversion rate
- Performance vs. control/baseline variant

Confidence Levels
HashBar calculates statistical significance to ensure your results are reliable, not due to chance.

Statistical Calculation
HashBar uses Chi-square tests and conversion rate calculations to determine if differences between variants are statistically significant.
- Null hypothesis: Both variants perform identically
- Test goal: Reject the null hypothesis with sufficient confidence
- Result: Clear winner identified or inconclusive (keep testing)
Automatic Winner Detection
Winner Identification
Once you've collected enough data with statistical significance, HashBar automatically identifies the winning variant based on:
- Highest conversion rate
- Consistent performance across impressions
- Statistical confidence threshold met
Automatic Actions
You can configure HashBar to automatically take action when a winner is detected:
- Option 1: Automatically promote winner and stop test
- Option 2: Notify you and wait for manual approval
- Option 3: Continue test until a specific end date
Test Completion
When a test ends, you can:
- Promote the winning variant as your permanent bar
- Run another test with new variants
- Implement insights learned into future campaigns
How to Set Up an A/B Test
Step 1: Create Your Control Variant
- Navigate to your announcement bar settings
- Configure the control variant (Variant A) with your baseline messaging and design
- This is typically your current bar or a well-performing previous version
Step 2: Create Alternative Variants
- Click "Add Test Variant" to create Variant B
- Change one key element (message, color, CTA, offer, etc.)
- Repeat to create additional variants if desired (C, D, E, etc.)
- Pro Tip: Test one variable at a time for clear insights
Step 3: Configure Traffic Distribution
- Set the percentage of traffic for each variant
- For equal testing: 50% / 50% (or 33% / 33% / 33% for three variants)
- Ensure percentages total 100%
Step 4: Set Statistical Confidence Level
- Choose Low, Medium, or High confidence
- Medium is recommended for most tests
- Use High for critical business decisions
Step 5: Enable Conversion Tracking
- Ensure conversion tracking is configured
- This could be purchase events, form submissions, or custom events
- Without conversions, only CTR can be measured
Step 6: Launch the Test
- Set a test duration (recommend 7-14 days minimum)
- Click "Start A/B Test"
- Monitor results in the analytics dashboard
Step 7: Analyze Results
- Review per-variant metrics in the dashboard
- Wait for statistical significance to be reached
- When winner is identified, review results
- Implement learnings in your next iteration

What NOT to Change
- Don't change multiple variables in one test - you won't know what caused the difference
- Don't run tests on dramatically different traffic sources - results may not be comparable

- High CTR, low conversions: Variant attracts clicks but doesn't convert - check offer relevance
- Low CTR, good conversions: Few see it, but interested visitors do convert - consider visibility
- Always prioritize conversions over CTR for business impact
